Two Form Four students tragically lost their lives after a septic tank collapsed at Ramba Boys High School in Rarieda, Siaya County.
The incident occurred around 6:00 PM when the students, along with several others, were on top of the septic tank.
The structure suddenly caved in, and while many students managed to escape unharmed, two students tragically fell into the tank and died.
A junior teacher at the school confirmed that most of the students managed to flee the scene without injuries.
However, two students sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Tragically, the two fatalities were not so fortunate and were trapped in the collapsed tank.
Emergency response teams, including the police and Kenya Red Cross officials, arrived at the scene and worked overnight to retrieve the bodies from the wreckage.
The search and recovery operations were challenging due to the difficult terrain and the collapse of the tank, but the teams were able to recover the bodies early the following morning.
In the wake of the tragedy, Siaya Governor James Orengo expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased students, the school community, and the entire region.
Through a public statement, Governor Orengo assured residents of his administration’s commitment to improving the safety and well-being of students across the county.
He emphasized that an investigation would be launched to determine the cause of the collapse and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Governor Orengo also called for calmness and unity during this painful period, urging the school community to support each other as they navigate the aftermath of this devastating loss.
The tragic event has left the local community in shock and has raised concerns about the safety of school infrastructure, especially in rural areas.
The authorities have promised to conduct a thorough examination of school facilities to ensure the safety of students and staff moving forward.
