Police Post In Mwea-West, Kirinyaga County Shut Down Over Unresolved Rent Arrears

A police post in Mwea-West, Kirinyaga County, has been shut down, and six officers have been transferred due to unresolved rent arrears.

The officers had been living in a house provided by businessman Mwangi Thuita, who passed away in 2018.

Following his death, his daughter, Irene Njeri, informed the officers that they were required to begin paying rent.

However, the rent arrears have since accumulated to over sh. 2 million, prompting the family to reclaim the property.

“Before my father passed away, he instructed the officers to start paying rent from 2018.

The arrears have now surpassed sh. 2 million, which is why we decided to take back our property and lease it to others,” said Njeri.

The closure of the police post surprised local residents, with some expressing concerns about the impact on security.

“Where are they going? The police have greatly improved security here since 2016.

What will we do now?” asked Grace Wanjiru, a local resident.

In response, Mwea West Police Commander Rashid Ali assured residents that they will continue to receive police services from the nearby Rukanga police post, located about four kilometers away.
