Veteran Nation Media Group (NMG) journalist Leon Lidigu has been honored at the global Africa Health Agenda International Conference (AHAIC) after winning the 2025 Women in Global Health Award.
The AHAIC is co-organized by Amref Health Africa, the Ministry of Health Rwanda, the African Union, and Africa CDC.
The Women in Global Health Awards recognize individuals who have made significant strides in addressing urgent health and development challenges for women.
This year, Lidigu won in the Male Allies category, which honors those advancing gender equality in health through mentoring women, promoting gender-responsive policies, or leading initiatives supporting women’s leadership in global health.
As a journalist, Lidigu highlighted the struggles of young women in Kibra, who were resorting to sexual exploitation to afford basic needs like sanitary towels and food.
His reporting sparked a social media campaign that benefited over 50,000 women from low-income households.
Lidigu was nominated after a public call for outstanding African changemakers in areas like innovation, climate action, and youth empowerment.
He is the only Kenyan among this year’s awardees.
In a letter from Amref Health Africa Group CEO Dr. Githinji Gitahi, Lidigu was praised for his contributions to women’s health through solution-oriented journalism.
Speaking to the media, Lidigu dedicated the award to those sharing their stories, allowing journalists to drive social change and hold governments accountable.
Lidigu will attend the AHAIC 2025 awards ceremony in Kigali, Rwanda, from March 3 to March 6.
He is a multi-award-winning climate-health journalist and serves on the AfricaREACH Leadership Council.
