Why Azimio La Umoja Chose Gladys Wanga As The New ODM Chairperson: A Commitment To Women’s Leadership And Party Growth

Azimio leader Raila Odinga has praised Gladys Wanga for being appointed the new chairperson of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), emphasizing the party’s commitment to promoting women’s leadership.

Speaking at Wanga’s Thanksgiving service in Homabay on Sunday, Raila said that women deserve to hold the highest positions in society, stressing that the notion that women “cannot” lead is misguided.

“Some say women cannot do it, but those who think that are fools,” Raila said, as he highlighted the critical role women play in society, from conception and childbirth to nurturing and raising children.

Raila condemned those who fail to respect women, acknowledging their invaluable contribution to the growth and development of any community.

He called for greater respect for women, asserting that leadership roles should be open to women for the country to prosper.

“We should give women leadership opportunities in our country.

We should respect them, so we can prosper as a nation,” he added.

Wanga’s appointment as ODM national chairperson marks a significant milestone for the party.

She takes over from Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, who previously held the position.

The decision was made during the party’s Central Committee meeting on August 9, 2024.

Alongside Wanga, ODM also appointed new deputy party leaders, including Governors Simba Arati (Kisii), Abdulswamad (Mombasa), and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi.

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o assumed the role of acting party leader, stepping in temporarily after Raila.

Wanga, who welcomed supporters to the Thanksgiving service, described the event as a historic moment for ODM.

During the rally, Raila urged ODM supporters to actively participate in the upcoming grassroots elections, emphasizing that the party is the key to empowering the Nyanza community.

“The ODM party stands for justice and truth. It is a democratic party.

This is why we have made these new appointments,” Raila said, hinting at his ambition to vie for a higher position within the African Union. He stated that Africa must rise to join other continents in achieving greatness.
