The family of Tracy Nyariki, the 31-year-old Kenyan woman found dead in the United States, has shared the heartbreaking details surrounding her tragic death.
Nyariki, a resident of Newark, Delaware, was reported missing shortly before Christmas, with her body discovered in a car belonging to the primary suspect, Nobert Matara, on Friday, December 20.
The New Castle County Police Department had launched a search for Nyariki after her workplace notified authorities that she had not shown up for work in several days.
The family believes that jealousy over Nyariki’s recent engagement may have played a role in her death.
According to them, her ex-partner, Matara, became enraged after Nyariki moved on with a new partner, celebrating a traditional wedding just weeks before her death.
“They broke up long ago, and Tracy moved on with her life,” said one of her sisters.
“I think he saw that he lost chances with her completely.”
The news of Nyariki’s death shocked her family, who described her as being in high spirits before the tragedy.
“My auntie told us they were looking for her.
We were eventually told she had been found, but we were never told to what extent,” said one relative.
“On Saturday, one of our cousins told us she was missing. We were very worried, and on Sunday night we were informed that she was no more.”
This devastating loss is the third tragedy to strike the family in recent years.
Nyariki’s mother passed away in 2013, and her father has been wheelchair-bound since suffering a stroke in 2010.
Nyariki’s uncle shared that she was relatively new in her job as a nurse in the US, and her family in Kenya depended on her support, particularly for her father’s medical needs.
“She has not been in that job for many years. Some of us were happy for her because she could help us with her dad’s medicine and other issues in the family,” he said.
As they cope with the loss, the family is also facing the logistical challenges of bringing Nyariki’s body back to Kenya for burial, adding another layer of difficulty during this already painful time.
