Xavier Jerry Nato, a beloved actor and thespian best known for his roles in Tahidi High, Salem, and Wash and Set, has passed away after a prolonged battle with illness and kidney failure.
Nato’s health had been deteriorating due to a stroke, which eventually led to kidney failure, prompting his family to appeal for financial support for his ICU treatment.
The news of his death was confirmed by the Kenya Theatre Awards (KTA), who remembered Nato as a key figure in Kenya’s theatre scene over the last two decades.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Xavier Jerry Nato, a prolific Kenyan thespian, after a long illness bravely borne,” a statement from KTA read.
“He left an indelible mark on the industry, inspiring and mentoring many young talents.”
Nato was particularly celebrated for his award-winning work, including his victory at the KTA’s Inaugural Best Playwright Award in 2022.
He was also a co-founder of Millaz Productions, an influential group that contributed to shaping Kenya’s theatrical landscape.
“His productions, particularly in the Kenya National Drama and Film Festival, remain a testament to his extraordinary talent,” the statement added.
In addition to his achievements in theatre, tributes have poured in from colleagues, friends, and fans alike.
Job Masika, a close friend of Nato, shared a heartfelt message, saying, “I have lost a brother, confidant, and friend.
If I were to write a book about my life, Xavier would take half of the book. My feelings are conflicted.” Many others have expressed their shock and sorrow, describing the profound impact Nato had on those around him.
His legacy as an artist, mentor, and friend will live on, leaving a lasting influence on Kenya’s vibrant arts community.
