Kim Kardashian and Kanye West put their complicated history aside for one important reason: their daughter North West.
The former couple were both in attendance at 13-year-old North’s first headlining concert at The Vic Theatre in Chicago on Saturday, September 5, turning the young rapper’s career milestone into an unexpected family reunion.
But while Kim and Kanye were united in supporting their daughter, they reportedly made sure to maintain their distance throughout the evening.
Kim and Kanye watch North from opposite sides
According to footage from the sold-out event, Kim and Kanye arrived separately and watched North’s performance from different parts of the theatre.
Kim was spotted in the VIP section, while Kanye, who was born and raised in Chicago, watched from another section and was seen recording his daughter on his phone.
Kim later shared moments from the performance on her Instagram Stories, celebrating North as she took another major step in her emerging music career.
Despite their separation, the appearance demonstrated that both parents were prepared to put their differences aside for their daughter.
Kim and Kanye, who were married for nearly eight years before their divorce, also share Saint, Chicago and Psalm.
North turns Chicago into her own stage
The concert marked a significant moment for North, who has increasingly stepped out of her parents’ enormous shadows to establish herself as a young artist.
She performed material from her debut EP “N0rth4evr,” a six-track project released earlier this year.
The project has been described as blending elements of rage rap, hyperpop, emo, alternative rock and metal.
North reportedly performed all six songs from the project during the Chicago show, including tracks such as “Piercing On My Hand” and “W0ah.” She also performed an unreleased song that samples Kanye’s “Coldest Winter.”
The show came shortly after her planned 14-date Kimokawaii Tour with rapper Molly Santana was cancelled.
Rather than disappearing from the spotlight, North moved ahead with the Chicago performance, giving fans an opportunity to see her headline a show on her own.
Kanye’s concerns over North’s image
North’s growing independence has also reportedly created disagreements between her parents.
The teenager has become increasingly adventurous with her appearance, including experimenting with blue hair and piercings.
Earlier this year, she was photographed displaying various piercings, including facial and hand piercings.
In an August interview with Dazed, North spoke openly about her fascination with piercings and said she wanted blue hair and piercings as part of her personal style.
She also revealed that there are limits imposed by her parents on what she can do.
The issue has reportedly become a source of tension, with Kanye expressing strong opinions about his daughter’s increasingly mature fashion choices and piercings.
That disagreement has added another layer to the already highly publicised co-parenting relationship between the two stars.

Candace Owens’ awkward Kim encounter
The Chicago trip also produced an unexpected celebrity moment involving conservative commentator Candace Owens.
Owens later recounted an awkward encounter with Kim in a hotel lobby while she was in Chicago for Kanye’s concert events.
According to Owens, she was collecting concert passes when she suddenly noticed Kim Kardashian nearby.
Owens said she had not seen Kim since before the couple’s divorce and became uncomfortable because of previous public comments she had made about Kardashian.
Owens described the moment as awkward, saying she simply looked toward Kim and gave her a half-smile.
The encounter added another talking point to an already drama-filled Chicago weekend surrounding Kanye.
North’s rise comes with enormous expectations
North West has grown up under extraordinary public scrutiny as the daughter of two globally recognised figures in music, fashion and entertainment.
Her father is one of the most influential, yet controversial, figures in modern hip-hop, while her mother has built a global business empire through SKIMS and her wider entertainment career.
North therefore faces an unusual challenge: establishing an identity of her own while constantly being compared with both parents.
Her recent performances suggest she is determined to embrace music rather than simply remain a celebrity child.
At 13, she has already appeared on stage with Kanye, performed at major music events and released her own project.
Her first Chicago headlining concert represents perhaps her clearest attempt yet to demonstrate that she wants to be taken seriously as an artist.

For Kim and Kanye, however, the night appeared to be less about their differences and more about their daughter.
Whatever tensions exist between the former couple, both made the trip to The Vic Theatre, and North had both of her famous parents watching as she took centre stage.
The striking image of Kim on one side of the venue and Kanye on the other may have captured the reality of their relationship today: Separate lives, complicated history, but a shared commitment to cheering on their daughter.
