Cop injured in accidental shooting during Nairobi River demolitions

A police officer was injured after accidentally shooting himself in the foot while dispersing looters during demolitions along the Nairobi River basin.

The officer attached to the Quick Response Unit (QRU) in Kayole, was among officers deployed to maintain order during the demolition exercise along Kombo Munyiri on Thursday afternoon.

According to police, the officer accidentally discharged a pump-action rifle, shooting himself on the middle toe of his right foot at around 3pm.

He was rushed to Nairobi West Hospital for treatment, where he was admitted in stable condition.

The demolitions along the Nairobi River basin have been accompanied by heightened security as police officers confront looters and other groups seeking to disrupt the exercise.

Meanwhile, a Nairobi family is seeking justice after their 14-year-old daughter was allegedly burned with boiling water at Mumbuni Girls Senior School, leaving her out of class for more than two months.

The Grade 10 student said she was bullied and assaulted by a Form Three student on the night of June 9, but her mother claims the school administration and police have failed to adequately address the matter.

What was supposed to be a safe space for learning turned into a nightmare for the student after the incident at the school’s hot water fetching point.

The student said she was fetching water when a Form Three student allegedly confronted her over who would fetch water first.

According to the mother, the school administration told her to seek treatment for her daughter in Nairobi, saying the alleged perpetrator’s parent would cover the medical bills. The mother says she reported the matter at Machakos Police Station before taking her daughter to Dandora 2 Health Centre for treatment.

She said the financial and emotional burden has since fallen entirely on her, forcing her to stop working so she can care for her daughter.

Police at Machakos Police Station said investigations into the assault are still ongoing. No arrests have been made so far.

There was no official comment from the school on the saga.
