An autopsy has revealed the cause of death for a man who passed away thirty minutes after being booked at a police post in Kiambu County.
Samuel Kimamo Muchemi was arrested on the night of December 12, 2024, and detained at Muchatha Police Post.
He was later pronounced dead the following morning, with police initially reporting that he died by suicide.
However, a postmortem has now confirmed that Kimamo’s death resulted from cardiorespiratory failure caused by neck compression due to strangulation.
The report also indicated there were no signs of hanging or suspension.
Muchemi’s arrest followed an altercation with a local chief and police officers at an entertainment spot in Muchatha.
Witnesses claimed that the officers and the chief physically subdued him during the arrest.
The family of the deceased has rejected the suicide theory, asserting that Muchemi would not have taken his own life after being detained for a drunken driving incident.
They are now calling for a thorough investigation into the events surrounding his arrest and detention.
“We want justice and the truth about what happened. We need to know what occurred during the time between his arrest and his booking in the cell,” said Daniel Maina, Muchemi’s brother.
In response, the police have distanced themselves from the incident but have pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation.
The matter has been handed over to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), which is conducting its own inquiry.
Kiambaa Sub County Commander Pius Mwanthi urged the public to be patient as the investigation continues, with both IPOA and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) involved in the process.
“IPOA and DCI have taken over the matter, and we ask the public to allow them to carry out their work,” Mwanthi said.
