The body of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga arrived at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, at 2:20 p.m. this afternoon, escorted by a heavily guarded police convoy and trailed by thousands of supporters who have come from across the country to pay their last respects.
The journey from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Kasarani was anything but smooth.
Emotional crowds lined the streets, demanding the convoy slow down so they could walk alongside and honor their fallen leader.
At various points, the convoy was forced to halt as mourners surged forward, singing liberation songs and waving Kenyan flags.
Upon arrival at Kasarani, the atmosphere is electric and emotional.
The stadium is packed to capacity, with tens of thousands of Kenyans already inside or gathered outside, waiting for official directions from the National Funeral Committee on how the public viewing will proceed.
Heavy police presence has been deployed around the stadium to ensure order and safety amid the massive turnout.
Officers from multiple security units are manning entrances, patrolling walkways, and guiding the crowd to designated areas.
Inside the stadium, a solemn mood prevails as mourners, many dressed in orange ODM party colors or black in mourning, await their chance to view the body.
Several large screens have been installed to help those in the outer sections follow the proceedings.
ODM leaders and government officials are expected to address the public shortly, with a structured program to allow as many people as possible to participate in the historic moment.
This shift to Kasarani came after overwhelming numbers gathered at Parliament Buildings, forcing the funeral committee to change the venue to accommodate the national outpouring of grief.
The State Funeral Service will take place on Friday at Nyayo National Stadium, followed by Raila’s final journey to Kisumu and then Bondo for burial on Sunday.
As of now, the public viewing at Kasarani is set to continue into the evening, under tight security and coordination by government agencies and ODM officials.
