Kenyan celebrities and social media users have piled on blogger Edgar Obare following a Nairobi court ruling that ordered him to pay Sh6 million to Bernice Muna and Kelvin Kaume Maingi for defamation.
According to Nairobi News, the judgment delivered on Thursday, December 5, came after Obare was found liable for publishing false and defamatory statements linking the two to an alleged affair.
The court also mandated that the blogger issue a public apology in addition to paying the hefty damages.
Sh6 Million For Damages
Principal Magistrate Hosea Mwangi Ng’ang’a, who delivered the verdict on November 7, 2025, stated that Obare’s posts on Telegram and Instagram were false, malicious, and had caused significant reputational and emotional harm to the plaintiffs.

The case stemmed from a series of posts made by Obare between December 1 and 5, 2022, where he alleged that Muna was romantically involved with Maingi, whom he described as a “married sponsor.”
The court found that these claims, which reached over 100,000 followers, unfairly portrayed Maingi as an unfaithful husband and Muna as a participant in the alleged affair.
In his defense, Obare argued that he was practising “citizen journalism” and relying on anonymous sources known as “bnnpaparazzi.”
He further claimed that his platform functioned as a digital newspaper.
However, the court dismissed these arguments, ruling that his posts were unverified and damaging.
Obare Seems Help From Kenyans
Following the ruling, Obare turned to his online followers for help in raising the Sh6 million, sharing a Paybill number and pleading for donations to cover the fine.
While some netizens promised support, many took the opportunity to mock him mercilessly.
A host of Kenyan celebrities and social media personalities joined in the ridicule.
Content creator Terence Creative and self-proclaimed billionaire Madollar Mapesa were among those publicly chastising the blogger.
Terence Creative wrote:
“Utulipishe udaku alafu urudi tena tukuchangie pesa ya wakili, mbeya wewe jipange wacha kuextort ‘wapenda’ chai.”
Meanwhile, Madollar Mapesa added:
“When you got big mouth with no money and no connections…KAMITI EXPRESS….I will pay for prison bus expressway ya Thika Road….No one should send this con even a coin. He wants to con you through that Paybill….Enda ulioe na moshene…..maskini wewe.”

Obare, who has long courted controversy with his celebrity ‘tea’, now faces public scrutiny not just from his followers, but from those he has targeted over the years.
His latest court troubles have given his victims a reason to celebrate while sending a stern warning to the blogger about the limits of gossip.
