Council of governors elects new leadership team led by chairperson Ahmed Abdullahi to advance strategic priorities


Under the leadership of Chairperson Ahmed Abdullahi, the Council of Governors (CoG) held a full council meeting to elect a new executive team and chairpersons for its technical committees.

The elections were conducted through consensus and marked the beginning of a new leadership chapter to steer the Council’s strategic agenda for the next year.

In line with Sections 19(2) and 19(3) of the Intergovernmental Relations Act, 2012, the Council reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening devolution through inclusive, consultative, and results-driven leadership.

The newly appointed leaders represent the diversity and unity of Kenya’s 47 counties and are expected to play a critical role in influencing national policy, enhancing intergovernmental collaboration, and promoting county interests both nationally and regionally.

The newly elected chairpersons for the CoG’s technical committees are as follows: FCPA Fernandes Barasa (Kakamega County) will lead the Finance, Planning and Economic Affairs Committee; Abdullswamad Shariff Nassir (Mombasa County) will head the Health Committee; Rt. Hon. Kenneth Lusaka (Bungoma County) will chair the Agriculture and Livestock Development Committee; and Dr. Wilber Ottichilo (Vihiga County) will lead the Environment, Forestry and Climate Change Committee.

Stephen Sang (Nandi County) will chair the Resource Mobilization and Partnerships Committee, while Nathif J. Adam (Garissa County) will lead the ASAL and Disaster Risk Management Committee.

Additionally, Dr. Paul Otuoma (Busia County) was appointed to chair the Blue Economy Committee; Dr. Erick Mutai (Kericho County) will head the Education Committee; Simon Kachapin (West Pokot County) will oversee the Gender, Youth, Sports, Culture and Social Services Committee; and Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay County) will lead the Human Resources, Labour and Social Welfare Committee.

The Council highlighted that the elected leaders bring a wealth of experience and regional representation, which will be essential in addressing major national challenges such as economic recovery, climate change resilience, healthcare reform, education improvement, and youth empowerment.

These chairpersons are expected to drive sector-specific reforms, foster policy innovation, and ensure efficient service delivery across all counties.

Emphasizing its commitment to cooperative governance, the Council of Governors pledged to maintain strong partnerships with national government bodies, development partners, and other stakeholders to enhance the impact of devolution and improve the lives of all Kenyans.
