Tragedy struck in Miritini, Jomvu, Mombasa County, on Monday when a perimeter wall collapsed, killing five people.
The victims, who had attended a burial ceremony, sought shelter from a heavy downpour against the wall surrounding a nearby factory.
According to Ibrahim Basafar, an official from the county’s emergency response department, the incident occurred at around 2:30 p.m.
Police reports confirm that the five fatalities included four women and one man, while three other women sustained injuries.
Chief Binti Saidi Mwangolo alerted authorities after the collapse of the old perimeter wall of Kusco Company, which was weakened by the rain.
A team from Maganda Police Station, DCI Jomvu, and Aps Jomvu quickly responded to the scene.
The bodies of the deceased were transported to Coast General Hospital mortuary for preservation, pending autopsies.
The collapse has been attributed to the heavy rainfall that had been affecting the area.
