The Ministry of Health, through its Department of Sensitization has organized comprehensive workshop on drug and substance abuse to equip communities with practical strategies for addressing this escalating public health crisis.
The initiative which targets participants from Meru, Embu , Tharaka Nithi, Isiolo, Kirinyaga and Marsabit counties responds to the growing concerns about the detrimental impact of substance abuse on youth, families and communities especially during the coming festive.
During a recent public baraza community members and leaders highlighted key challenges including limited access to rehabilitation services, insufficient education on the long-term effects of substance abuse and the lack of robust family and community support systems to assist those straggling with addiction.
The discussions delved into the wide – ranging consequences of substance abuse such as family breakdowns, increased crime rates and hindered youth development while emphasizing the need for actionable solutions.
Proposed measures included grassroots awareness campaigns tailored to the specific needs of each county, expansion of treatment facilities for easier access to rehabilitation and initiatives to promote healthier, substance- free lifestyles particularly for vulnerable groups like the youth.

Leaders commended the proactive, community driven approaches shared during the forum, with one official noting that sustainable solutions required a united front involving families, communities and local leaders.
This workshop marks the beginning of a series of similar initiatives across the six counties as the Ministry seeks to empower communities through collective action and sustainable programs.
Training seasons resources mobilization effort and collaborations with civil society organizations are being incorporated into the strategy to ensure long-term impact.
However, the ministry reiterating its commitment to tackling the root causes of drug and substance abuse while emphasized the importance of policy reforms, community engagement and multi-sectorial partnerships to create a healthier substance free future for all.
