Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed on Thursday that no arrests have been made in the ongoing investigation into the abduction of Wajir Member of County Assembly (MCA), Yussuf Hussein Ahmed.
Appearing before the National Assembly‘s Administration and Security Committee, IG Kanja stated that the police have yet to determine the whereabouts of the MCA, who went missing on September 13, 2024.
He assured the committee that investigations into the case remain active.
“So far, after the report was made to the police, we have been carrying out investigations, and this case remains active.
However, we have not received any new information about the whereabouts of the honourable member,” Kanja told lawmakers.
He also appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information about the case to come forward.
“We are still appealing to the public for any information that could help us locate the missing MCA,” he added.
The search for Yussuf Hussein Ahmed, who represents Della Anole Ward in Wajir County, has drawn widespread concern.
On October 20, 2024, a body was discovered at Lake Yahud, which was initially believed to be that of the missing MCA.
However, DNA tests later confirmed that the body did not match Ahmed’s, leaving the case unresolved and fueling suspicions about the identity of the deceased.
The disappearance of the MCA prompted strong reactions, including from the County Assemblies Forum, which, on October 31, issued a warning to the government.
The Forum threatened to shut down the operations of all 47 county assemblies in two weeks unless the missing MCA was found, either dead or alive.
According to reports, Ahmed was abducted on the night of September 13 by armed assailants while traveling to Nairobi.
The attackers, believed to be well-coordinated and armed, forced Ahmed into a vehicle.
Following the incident, local leaders and residents condemned the abduction, calling for immediate action from law enforcement.
Earlier, the Nairobi High Court had ordered the government to produce Ahmed after his family raised concerns that the body found at Lake Yahud might have been planted as part of a cover-up or an attempt to mislead them.
The Inspector General also provided a broader update on abductions across the country, noting that, out of 57 abductions reported in 2024, 22 have been solved, 29 remain unresolved, and six victims have been found dead.
“Rest assured, we are on top of all these cases,” IG Kanja affirmed.
“Our mission is clear: to bring the perpetrators to justice, and we will not relent until we do so.”
The investigation into MCA Ahmed’s abduction and disappearance continues, with law enforcement officials following up on intelligence leads that may shed light on his fate.
