Roseline Odede, Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), will be laid to rest on January 18 at her family home in Ruma Village, Uyoma Katwenga, Siaya County.
The announcement was made by her family, who also noted that further details regarding funeral arrangements will be shared later.
Odede passed away on Friday, January 3, after a brief illness, which her family described as one she bravely endured.
KNCHR Vice Chairperson Raymond Nyeris expressed deep sorrow over her passing, highlighting her exceptional service and leadership at the Commission.
“Her untimely death is a significant loss to the Commission and the nation at large.
As Chairperson, she exemplified dedication and commitment to advancing human rights,” Nyeris said.
The Commission has called on Kenyans to honor Odede’s legacy, emphasizing that her work and commitment to justice and equality will continue to inspire their efforts.
Odede, an accomplished advocate of the High Court of Kenya, was also a Certified Mediator, Arbitrator, and Social and Environmental Impact Auditor and Assessor.
Her distinguished career included serving as Vice Chairperson of the Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board and contributing to various professional organizations such as the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, East Africa Law Society, and FIDA Kenya.
Her contributions were widely recognized, including a special acknowledgment from the East Africa Law Society for her exemplary legal practice and service.
Roseline Odede is survived by her husband, Dr. Joram Odede, and daughters Clara and Diane Odede.
President William Ruto led the nation in mourning her loss, describing Odede as a formidable champion of human rights and an advocate for a fairer and more equal society.
“Our thoughts and love are with the family at this sorrowful moment. Rest in peace, Roseline,” the president said on his official X account.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki also paid tribute, remembering her as a dedicated legal professional and a tireless defender of rights and freedoms.
