The tragic death of Hamisi Ibrahim in Likoni, Mombasa County, has brought to light conflicting accounts about the events leading to his fatal shooting by police on the morning of Tuesday, January 7, 2025.
According to Likoni Sub-County Police Commander Geoffrey Ruheni, Hamisi was part of a juvenile gang accused of terrorizing students, which led to a confrontation with law enforcement.
“They proceeded towards the officers wielding pangas. The officers had no option but to use their firearms,” Ruheni stated, justifying the use of lethal force.
However, Hamisi’s family paints a different picture, mourning the loss of a son they describe as innocent and hardworking.
His mother, Fatuma Haji, recounted his final moments, stating that Hamisi had left home after tea to visit friends while waiting for his school uniform to be finished.
“Minutes later, we heard gunshots outside. I feel deep pain as a parent for losing my son,” she said.
Fatuma also revealed that Hamisi was set to join Grade 9 on January 8, but had delayed reporting to school because his uniform was not ready.
She dismissed police allegations of her son’s involvement in criminal activities, asserting, “My son was not a thief and never displayed bad behavior while he was alive.
He occasionally met with friends for small social gatherings, but nothing criminal.”
Fatuma explained that Hamisi was shot in the head, with the bullet also striking his left eye.
This incident comes against the backdrop of rising cases of teenage crime in Mombasa County.
Recently, police arrested a machete-wielding gang of eight members linked to a series of violent attacks in Bamburi.
Items recovered included pangas, stolen mobile phones, and other valuables.
The case has reignited debates about police use of force and the systemic challenges driving youth into crime.
As investigations continue, Hamisi’s family is left seeking justice and grappling with the devastating loss of their son.
