Kuresoi North Villagers Torch Houses Allegedly Used For Chang’aa Brewing After Man Dies from Illicit Alcohol

A group of villagers in Sasumwa village, Kuresoi North, set fire to three houses on Wednesday, alleging they were used as chang’aa brewing dens, in protest after a man died from consuming the illicit alcohol.

Peter Kering, the Nyumba Kumi chairman in the village, confirmed that the man, in his 40s, passed away after drinking chang’aa at one of the brewing dens.

“We’ve been struggling to eliminate the consumption of illicit brew, but the culprits continue to set up new dens,” he said.

Joseph Ruto, a village elder, explained that the community was outraged over the death and decided to burn down the suspected brewers’ homes.

“We have informed the security officers and the chiefs, but no action has been taken to address the situation,” he added.

Joyce Ngetich, a local resident, expressed the frustration of many women in the area, whose husbands have become unproductive and spend their time in the brewing dens.

“We are not backing down on this issue and are calling on government officials to take action against those responsible,” she said.
