The Ministry of Interior has identified several high-risk areas along major roads in the country as part of efforts to curb road accidents during the festive season.
These high-risk areas, known as blackspots, are sections of the road where numerous accidents involving fatalities or serious injuries have occurred in the past.
In Nairobi, the blackspots include the Kasarani-GSU stretch, Westlands to Kabete Road, and Mombasa Road between Airtel Headquarters and Cabanas.
Other accident-prone areas in the capital are Jogoo Road near the Maziwa Stage Footbridge, Waiyaki Way near the Kangemi Flyover, Thika Road at Kenyatta University, and the Ruai Bypass.
Additional blackspots in Nairobi are Lang’ata Road near the Carnivore Junction, Eastern Bypass near the Transami Footbridge, and the footbridge at General Motors (GM).
In the Coastal region, the identified blackspots are along the Tsavo-Maungu-Voi stretch, Maungu-Tsavo East Gate, Mazeras Miritini, and the Kilifi-Vipingo road section.
Other high-risk roads include the Kibarani-Changamwe Makande stretch, Kwale-Matuga Junction, Maji ya Chumvi, Uwanja wa Ndege, Maungu Area, and the Jiwe Tanga area in Malindi.
In Central Kenya, the blackspots listed are along the Kiganjo-Narumoru road, the Kibirigwi-Sagana stretch, Limuru-Uplands section, and Thika Blue Post-Sagana Bridge road.
Other accident-prone areas include the Makutano-Embu road, Kiriaini-Muranga road, Nyeri-Nyahururu road, Makongeni along Thika-Garissa road, and Kiambu-Muthaiga road.
The Rift Valley region also has several identified blackspots, including Molo GSU Camp in Salgaa, Timboroa-Burnt Forest stretch, Chepsir-Kipkelion Junction at Sachangwani, Kericho-Litein road, and Kericho-Kaitui section.
Other hotspots include Nanyuki-Isiolo Junction, Nyeri-Nyahururu at Wiyumiririe, Narok-Mai Mahiu Junction, Kinyinyi area along Narok Road, Katakala along Mulot-Narok Road, and Nakuru-Mau Summit Road.
In Western Kenya, the government highlighted the following blackspots: the Mbale-Vihiga road, Kakamega-Chavakali road, Kakamega-Kisumu-Ilesi-Museno road, Kakamega-Mumias road at Makunga, and the Kakamega-Webuye-Lubao highway.
