Hundreds of staff members at Moi University have staged a protest against the institution’s management, demanding its removal during a meeting with the Parliamentary Committee on Education.
Lecturers, along with other workers, confronted the committee, led by Tinderet MP Julius Melly, expressing their frustration with the current administration and calling for a fresh leadership change.
The committee is holding a crisis meeting at the university amid an ongoing standoff between the workers and the university’s management.
The meeting follows a recent announcement by University Vice Chancellor Isaac Kosgey, who had declared the reopening of Moi University with classes set to resume on Monday.
However, despite this announcement, all university staff have vowed to withhold their services until they are paid the arrears owed to them.
“We are here to understand the situation and discuss how we can help restore normalcy to the university,” Melly said in brief comments to the workers before entering the crisis meeting with representatives from the university staff unions, UASU and KUSU, and the university’s management.
Melly acknowledged the university’s significant challenges and hinted that a change in leadership might be necessary for the institution to move forward.
The workers’ month-long strike, which has disrupted operations at the university, is centered around demands for over Sh10 billion in unpaid dues.
This includes Sh5 billion owed for the workers’ pension scheme and another Sh1.2 billion for bank loans.
UASU branch secretary Ojuki Nyabuta emphasized that staff would not return to work until all financial obligations were met.
“We will not go back to class unless all our dues are paid. The management can reopen the university, but we will not be part of it,” Nyabuta said.
While some students have reported back to campus, uncertainty surrounds the university’s reopening as the standoff continues.
Many of the protesting workers are camped at the main campus, awaiting further discussions with the MPs.
Security has been heightened at the administration block, where the crisis meeting is taking place.
