Museveni Hosts Tyrese Gibson as Uganda Eyes His Influence for Tourism, Creative Industry

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has hosted American actor and R&B singer Tyrese Gibson at State House in a high-profile meeting that brought together Hollywood, Uganda’s creative industry and the country’s tourism ambitions.

Gibson, best known for his role as Roman Pearce in the blockbuster Fast & Furious film franchise, is in Uganda for a three-day visit that includes engagements around tourism, coffee and the country’s cultural heritage.

Unlike a routine celebrity courtesy call, the meeting appeared to have a broader economic and cultural dimension, with Museveni using the occasion to explain how international entertainers can contribute to Uganda’s development.

Museveni reveals what he discussed with Tyrese

After the meeting, Museveni shared a post on his official X account explaining the issues discussed with the Hollywood star.

“I welcome international artiste Tyrese Gibson to Uganda. We discussed the creative arts, tourism, and the shared history and heritage of Africa and African Americans,” Museveni said.

The President added that he had introduced Gibson to Uganda’s four sectors of socio-economic transformation and discussed the role that artistes can play, particularly within the services sector.

“I shared with him Uganda’s four sectors of socio-economic transformation, including the role of artistes like him in the services sector. We also discussed the opportunities in these sectors and how they can contribute to Uganda’s development,” Museveni wrote.

The remarks were also reported by Uganda’s Daily Monitor, which noted that the meeting focused on creative arts, tourism and the historical and cultural links between Africa and African Americans.

Coffee takes centre stage

Images and footage from the engagement showed Ugandan coffee products being displayed during Gibson’s visit, reinforcing the commercial side of the encounter.

The coffee presentation is significant because Uganda has increasingly promoted value-added agricultural products and sought to position its exports on international markets.

For Gibson, whose global profile stretches across music, film and entertainment, an association with Uganda provides the country with an opportunity to reach audiences far beyond East Africa.

His visit has therefore been viewed not only through the lens of celebrity diplomacy but also as an attempt to connect Uganda’s tourism, culture and products with international entertainment networks.

Tyrese Gibson’s Uganda visit

Gibson’s trip comes with a programme that includes a meeting with Museveni, visits linked to Uganda’s coffee sector and exploration of some of the country’s tourism attractions, including the Source of the Nile.

The actor has enjoyed a lengthy career in Hollywood, with his portrayal of Roman Pearce making him one of the recognisable faces of the Fast & Furious franchise.

Beyond acting, Gibson is a singer, songwriter, author, television producer and model, giving him a profile that spans several areas of the entertainment industry.

That combination could explain why Museveni placed particular emphasis on the creative sector during their discussions.

Museveni’s bigger economic message

The meeting also fits into Museveni’s broader economic messaging.

In his 2026 State of the Nation Address, the Ugandan president stressed the need to move more households into the money economy and highlighted commercial agriculture, manufacturing, services and ICT as important pillars of Uganda’s transformation.

Museveni has previously argued that Uganda needs to expand its markets beyond its domestic economy, including through regional and continental integration.

State House has similarly highlighted the importance of services and ICT alongside commercial agriculture and manufacturing.

Against that backdrop, an international celebrity such as Gibson can be viewed as more than a visitor.

His global reach potentially gives Uganda another channel through which to market its culture, tourism destinations and products.

Why the meeting matters

The encounter comes at a time when African countries are increasingly using entertainment and popular culture as tools for tourism promotion and international branding.

Hollywood personalities have the ability to generate enormous attention online, particularly when they document their experiences in African destinations.

A celebrity visit can therefore create exposure for destinations, hospitality businesses, cultural attractions and locally produced goods.

For Uganda, Gibson’s visit provides an opportunity to showcase a different side of the country to his international audience.

Uganda is already known for attractions such as the Source of the Nile, national parks, mountain gorillas and diverse cultural heritage.

Bringing globally recognised personalities into such spaces can help strengthen the country’s tourism storytelling.

Museveni and the African-American connection

Another notable aspect of the meeting was the discussion around the shared history and heritage of Africans and African Americans.

Museveni has repeatedly spoken about the importance of Africa’s historical relationship with the African diaspora.

His conversation with Gibson consequently offered an opportunity to frame the actor’s visit within a wider cultural connection rather than simply treating it as a celebrity appearance.

Gibson’s presence at State House has consequently generated attention across Uganda, with social media users reacting to the unusual sight of one of Hollywood’s familiar faces meeting the country’s long-serving president.

Some welcomed the encounter as a boost for Uganda’s international image, while others questioned whether international celebrities should receive presidential-level attention.

Similar mixed reactions were reported after Museveni posted footage of the meeting.

Regardless of the differing opinions, the meeting has placed Uganda, its tourism attractions, creative industry and coffee sector in the international spotlight.

For Gibson, it is an opportunity to experience Uganda beyond the Hollywood screen.

For Museveni’s administration, the visit presents another chance to use global entertainment influence to promote Uganda’s economic and cultural ambitions.

And with the President himself making clear that their conversation went beyond pleasantries, the Tyrese Gibson visit could ultimately prove to be part of Uganda’s wider strategy to connect tourism, culture, entertainment and economic development.
