A dormitory at Cardinal Otunga High School in Mosocho, Kisii County, was completely destroyed in a fire on Thursday evening, January 9.
The fire, which broke out around 6:00 PM, ravaged the building just two days after students returned to school following their break.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire quickly consumed the dormitory, with thick smoke billowing into the sky as students and staff looked on helplessly.
Firefighters from the Kisii County Government arrived at the scene promptly, assisted by students and local residents, and worked together to contain the blaze.
Video footage circulating on social media captured the intense fire, showing the structure being overtaken by flames as firefighters struggled to control the situation.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident.
School officials have since confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire, with the administration suggesting that it could be an act of arson.
The fire occurred just hours after Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced the results of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.
Some online speculations have linked the fire to the school’s performance in the 2024 national exams, although no official connection has been confirmed.
In related news, CS Ogamba revealed that a total of 962,512 candidates sat for the 2024 KCSE exams, up from 899,453 in 2023.
Additionally, the CS noted that approximately 840 candidates were involved in examination irregularities, leading to the cancellation of their results.
To accommodate those who missed exams, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) will conduct new mid-year KCSE exams in July.
Parents and students were advised to check their KCSE results online via the KNEC portal at https://results.knec.ac.ke/.
