A tragic bus accident on Thursday evening along the Migori Highway has left one person dead and several others injured.
The incident occurred near Nyachabo, when the bus, which was full of passengers, lost control and veered off the road before plunging into a ditch.
The bus, which was traveling from Kehancha in Kisii to Migori Town, is said to have overturned unexpectedly.
Eyewitnesses reported that the deceased, who died at the scene, was likely a crew member of the bus, with some suggesting that he was the bus manager.
Rescue teams quickly responded to the scene, working alongside locals to help those trapped in the wreckage.
The injured were treated with first aid before being transported to various hospitals in Migori for further medical attention.
Videos from the scene showed the vehicle leaning on one side, with a shattered windscreen and glass scattered on the ground, while rescuers and residents worked tirelessly to assist the victims.
This latest accident adds to the growing number of road incidents in Kenya this year. Just a week earlier, ten people lost their lives in a tragic collision between a lorry and a matatu along the Kitale-Eldoret Highway.
The lorry, reportedly speeding and carrying pipes from Kitale to Eldoret, lost control and crashed into an oncoming matatu, resulting in nine fatalities at the scene.
Five others sustained critical injuries and were rushed to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The rise in road accidents has prompted calls from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) for road users to be more cautious.
NTSA has urged drivers to prioritize safety, especially for children traveling to and from school, and to comply with road safety measures such as adhering to speed limits, maintaining roadworthy vehicles, and ensuring valid insurance and speed limiters are in place.
