The National Police Service has denied allegations that they arrested former Limuru Member of Parliament Peter Mwathi following a disturbance at a funeral attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in Limuru, Kiambu County.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja issued a statement on Friday, November 29, clarifying that Mwathi was not arrested, as he is not considered a person of interest in the ongoing investigation.
Kanja confirmed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers in Limuru have launched an inquiry into the cause of the altercation during the event and are working to identify and apprehend those responsible for the disruption.
The Inspector General further urged Kenyans with any information that could assist in identifying the suspects to report to the nearest police station.
Kanja’s clarification came after a group of allies of former Deputy President Gachagua visited the DCI headquarters in Kiambu, calling for the release of Mwathi.
Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa, addressing the press on Thursday, November 28, claimed that Mwathi had been abducted by men in a black Subaru car.
“We are here to demand a swift investigation into what happened today, including the attempted attack on Gachagua, allegedly orchestrated by hired goons linked to the government,” said Senator Thang’wa.
He also expressed concern about the whereabouts of Mwathi, asserting that he was taken by unknown men.
Inspector General Kanja’s statement came just hours after the DCI summoned the Senator for questioning regarding the violent incident during the funeral.
The summon required Senator Thang’wa to report to the Nyeri DCI headquarters to provide details related to property damage during the melee.
Senator Thang’wa confirmed he would cooperate with the authorities but also called on the government to restore security to former Deputy President Gachagua.
Despite the damage to Gachagua’s vehicle, including a shattered windscreen, the lawmaker assured the public that Gachagua was in stable condition.
