New details emerge on why matatu operators staged strike

New details have emerged on the reasons behind the strike staged by a section of matatu operators on Monday, which caused widespread traffic disruptions in several parts of Nairobi.

The operators downed their tools to protest what they described as persistent harassment and violent attacks by boda boda riders, particularly after road accidents involving public service vehicles.

According to the striking crews, some boda boda operators have been attacking and torching matatus before investigations are conducted, putting lives at risk and causing huge financial losses.

Matatu operators are now demanding that those responsible for the attacks be arrested and prosecuted, while also calling for stricter regulation and discipline of boda boda operators.

They claim that at least ten public service and private vehicles have been set ablaze in recent months in Nairobi, Thika and Nakuru following accidents.

The protest brought traffic to a standstill along major routes, with PSV operators blocking the Gitaru Interchange on Waiyaki Way, causing massive congestion on roads leading to the Central Business District (CBD).

Motorists were forced to seek alternative routes as traffic remained gridlocked for several hours.

Additional disruptions were reported near Khoja Roundabout and around Muthurwa along Haile Selassie Road in the CBD.

In another incident, matatus were parked near Kariobangi Roundabout along Outering Road, temporarily halting traffic in the area.

Police officers were deployed to all affected hotspots and worked to clear the roads and restore normal traffic flow.

Authorities said they were engaging stakeholders in the transport sector to de-escalate tensions and maintain public safety.

Despite the protests, several key roads remained unaffected. Kenyatta Avenue, Moi Avenue, Tom Mboya Street and surrounding streets were reported to be clear, while PSV operations along Ngong Road and Argwings Kodhek Road continued without interruption.

The striking operators accused boda boda riders of intimidation and interference with their work, warning that the situation could worsen if urgent action is not taken.

Police urged calm as dialogue continues and advised motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution and use alternative routes where necessary.

During the operation to restore order, police also removed and confiscated number plates from some matatus involved in the protests.
