Ol Kalou Residents Raise Sh28k to Buy Suit for DCP Candidate Douglas Kamau

A unique show of solidarity has emerged in Ol Kalou constituency after residents came together to raise Sh28,000 to buy a suit for Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) parliamentary candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru, popularly known as Sammy Ngotho.

The community fundraiser, which has attracted attention across Nyandarua County and beyond, saw more than 2,800 residents of Mugumo village contribute Sh10 each in support of the aspiring legislator ahead of the highly anticipated Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election slated for July 16, 2026.

The initiative was reportedly spearheaded by Nyandarua Senator John Methu, a key ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and a prominent figure within the DCP movement.

According to organizers, the funds were specifically intended to purchase a new suit for Kamau to wear during his campaign activities and, should he emerge victorious, at his swearing-in ceremony.

The fundraiser came in the wake of remarks allegedly made by senior politician Moses Kuria, who is said to have referred to Kamau as a “street boy” during the ongoing political exchanges surrounding the by-election.

Rather than dampening Kamau’s spirits, the comments appear to have galvanized his supporters.

Residents responded by turning what was meant to be a criticism into a symbol of grassroots empowerment, rallying behind the candidate and contributing towards the purchase of formal attire.

Speaking during the fundraising event, local leaders praised the residents for demonstrating that leadership should not be determined by one’s background or financial status.

“This is our candidate. We believe in him and we want him to represent us. What matters is service delivery, not how expensive one’s suit is,” one resident remarked.

The gesture has quickly gained traction on social media, with many Kenyans describing it as a powerful example of ordinary citizens supporting a candidate they believe understands their struggles.

Kamau’s rise in local politics has been closely watched in recent months, particularly as the Democracy for the Citizens Party seeks to expand its influence in the Mt Kenya region.

The party, associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his allies, has positioned itself as a champion of grassroots politics and citizen-centered leadership.

The Ol Kalou parliamentary seat fell vacant earlier this year, setting the stage for a fiercely contested by-election that is expected to serve as a key political battleground ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Political analysts have described the contest as more than just a constituency race, arguing that it could provide an indication of shifting political loyalties within the Mt Kenya region.

Supporters of Kamau say his humble beginnings and close connection with ordinary residents have contributed to his growing popularity.

They argue that his story resonates with many young people and small-scale traders who feel excluded from mainstream politics.

As campaigns intensify ahead of the July 16 vote, the Sh28,000 suit fundraiser has become one of the defining moments of the race, transforming a political jab into a powerful statement of community support.

For many residents of Mugumo village, the contribution was not merely about buying a suit.

It was a symbolic declaration that leadership is earned through the trust and backing of the people rather than wealth, status, or political pedigree.

With just weeks remaining before voters head to the ballot, all eyes will be on Ol Kalou to see whether the overwhelming grassroots support demonstrated through the fundraiser will translate into victory for Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru at the polls.
