Police have arrested eight members of a machete-wielding gang responsible for terrorizing residents in Bamburi, Mombasa.
The arrests were made in Kijipwa, Kilifi County, following a successful ambush in the Bombo area of Kisauni.
These suspects are believed to be behind numerous violent attacks in Bamburi, including a particularly brutal incident where a victim tragically lost a hand during a raid.
The police recovered several machetes, mobile phones, and other stolen items from the scene, which are believed to be linked to the gang’s criminal activities.
The arrests come after a series of increasingly violent incidents that have left residents fearful for their safety.
A concerned Bamburi resident, who expressed his frustrations, said, “If we were given a chance, we would deal with these criminals ourselves.
We haven’t even had the chance to celebrate the New Year properly; we are living in constant fear, like chickens hiding in their homes.”
The community’s sense of insecurity has grown, particularly during school holidays.
The resident explained, “When schools are closed, that’s when the troublemakers come out.
It seems that many of the wrongdoers are students from nearby schools who take advantage of the break to engage in criminal activities and cause chaos in the area.”
Local authorities have promised increased patrols and heightened security measures to address the rising crime.
Residents are calling for stronger community engagement and more support from law enforcement to combat the gang’s reign of terror.
The police are also investigating the possible connections between the gang and local schools, in an effort to curb the recruitment of young individuals into criminal activity.
