Police in Nairobi have detained two matatus after they were caught violating traffic regulations along Magadi Road in Ongata Rongai.
The vehicles were impounded during a routine operation aimed at reducing reckless driving and improving road safety.
The matatus were found to be operating without the required permits, overloading passengers, and violating speed limits.
One of the vehicles was also seen making illegal maneuvers, posing a danger to passengers and other road users.
“The matatus were not only lacking the necessary permits but were also found to be violating speed limits and overloading passengers,” said a police officer involved in the operation.
“We are taking this action to ensure the safety of all road users, and the drivers will be held accountable for their reckless behavior.”
The incident has raised concerns over unsafe public transport in Nairobi, where rogue matatu operators continue to flout traffic laws.
Authorities are investigating the drivers for endangering public safety, and they could face hefty fines or the revocation of their licenses.
This operation is part of the Nairobi police’s initiative to curb road accidents, especially those involving public transport.
“There have been several cases where matatus are caught speeding or operating without valid insurance,” said a senior officer.
“We cannot allow this to continue as it puts the lives of passengers and road users in danger.”
The crackdown has drawn attention to a high-profile matatu, Money Fest, allegedly linked to President Ruto’s family. Videos circulating online show the vehicle flagrantly breaking traffic rules.
Critics argue that no matatu, regardless of ownership, should be exempt from consequences.
Police have pledged to intensify efforts to target rogue drivers and ensure safer roads.
“We are committed to increasing safety operations and conducting more frequent checks,” a police spokesperson confirmed.
