The Pwani University fraternity has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of student Aaron Kiprotich, who was reportedly stabbed to death at Mabirikani in Kilifi County in an incident allegedly involving fellow students.
The incident has sparked concern among students and residents, with reports indicating that two suspects have already been arrested as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the young man’s death continue.
According to initial reports, Kiprotich, also identified in some reports as Aaron Kiptoek Ruto, was a first-year student at Pwani University pursuing a Bachelor of Education Science (Computer) degree. He was reportedly 21 years old.
The student was allegedly found dead inside a rented house in Mabirikani Estate, within Kilifi Township, with a stab wound.
Police officers reportedly visited the scene and began investigations to establish what happened before the fatal incident.
Reports indicate that the deceased’s body was discovered in the sitting room of the house, where officers also recovered a kitchen knife handle as part of the initial investigations.
Two suspects have since been arrested in connection with the incident.
According to preliminary reports, one of the suspects was the deceased’s roommate, while the other lived in a neighbouring house.
However, the arrest of the suspects does not establish their guilt, and investigators are expected to establish their respective roles, if any, in the incident.
The motive behind the alleged killing has not been conclusively established.
The student’s body was reportedly moved to the Kilifi County Referral Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination to help determine the cause of death.
In a memorandum issued on Friday, October 23, Pwani University confirmed the death of Aaron Kiptoek Ruto and conveyed its condolences to his family, friends and fellow students.
The university community was left grieving the loss of a young student whose life and academic journey were cut short.
Ruto reportedly hailed from Kimurio village in Bungoma County.
His death has left his loved ones and university colleagues facing the painful reality of losing a young man who had embarked on his higher education journey with hopes for the future.
The tragedy has also renewed concerns about the safety of university students living in rented accommodation outside their institutions.
Many students live in neighbouring estates, where they balance their academic responsibilities with everyday life away from their families.

The incident has also drawn attention to previous cases of violence involving students in Kilifi.
In October 2023, Pwani University student Faith Adongo Owino was fatally stabbed while returning home, raising concerns about insecurity affecting students in the area.
Although the circumstances surrounding the two incidents are different, the cases highlight the devastating consequences of violence among young people and the need to address disputes peacefully while strengthening student safety.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to examine the available evidence, interview witnesses and establish the sequence of events that led to Kiprotich’s death.
The postmortem examination is also expected to provide further information about the fatal injuries.
The suspects will be subject to due process as investigators work to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to support criminal charges.
Meanwhile, the death has cast a shadow over the Pwani University community, with students and members of the public mourning the loss of one of their own.
As the family prepares to come to terms with the tragedy, questions remain about what led to the fatal stabbing and whether an earlier intervention could have prevented the loss of life.
Poleni sana to the family, friends and the entire Pwani University fraternity following the tragic death of Aaron Kiprotich.
May he rest in peace.
