Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has openly discussed the reasons behind his controversial impeachment and subsequent replacement by Kithure Kindiki.
Speaking on Sunday, January 5, at Tetu Catholic Church, Gachagua shared that his commitment to speaking out against the government’s unfulfilled promises led to his downfall.
“I thought we were aligned in the beginning, but I soon realized we were just telling lies,” Gachagua remarked.
He cited the failure to deliver on promises made in Ruring’u, such as the completion of a stadium, infrastructure development, and improvements in local hospitals.
He expressed frustration that, despite grand pledges, essential services like water, roads, and healthcare remained unmet.
Gachagua revealed that he had warned President William Ruto about the dangers of making false promises.
He believes that his insistence on truthfulness and his challenge to the government’s narrative led to the decision to push him out of office.
“I told the President we needed to stop lying to Kenyans.
That’s when they began plotting to remove me,” Gachagua explained.
His impeachment began to take shape after Kibwezi West MP Eckomas Mwengi Mutuse filed a motion in the National Assembly on October 1, 2024.
Gachagua faced 11 charges, including undermining the President’s authority, corruption, money laundering, and violations of the Constitution.
The motion received overwhelming support in the assembly, passing with 282 MPs backing the move.
During his address, Gachagua also praised the Catholic bishops for their continued courage in speaking out against the government.
He commended them for being the moral voice of the nation, especially when others chose silence.
“The church has been the conscience of Kenya. Thank you to the bishops for always standing up for the people,” he said.
Since his removal from office, Gachagua has become an outspoken critic of the current administration, especially regarding issues like forced disappearances.
He has called for accountability, challenging the government to address these pressing concerns.
However, his criticism has fueled tensions within the Kenya Kwanza leadership.
National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah accused Gachagua of orchestrating the forced disappearances to frame President Ruto, an allegation Gachagua has vehemently denied.
The growing rift within the government has made Gachagua a prominent figure in the opposition, with many questioning the ongoing issues facing the country.
