A tragic accident on the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway on Sunday, January 5, has claimed the lives of two individuals and left several others injured.
The incident, which occurred near the Prison Bridge in Naivasha, involved a head-on collision between a Nissan Eldoret Shuttle matatu and a Nairobi-bound matatu bus.
According to reports, the crash resulted in a devastating scene, with five individuals suffering serious injuries.
Local road safety group Sikika Road Safety confirmed that the collision led to the immediate deaths of two passengers, while the five others were rushed to nearby medical facilities for urgent care.
“Let’s have an open conversation this year about whether head-on collisions are avoidable.
The collision occurred between an Eldoret Shuttle Nissan matatu and a Nairobi-bound matatu bus at Naivasha near the Prison Bridge,” Sikika Road Safety shared in a statement.
“Two lives have been lost, and five others are seriously injured.”
The accident comes amid a surge in road accidents as many people travel back to their homes for the new school year.
Just a day earlier, another accident involving two private vehicles near Nyakairo in Kinungi resulted in five injuries.
The victims were taken to Naivasha Subcounty Referral Hospital after receiving initial first aid from St. John Ambulance responders.
This accident follows another devastating collision two days earlier, on Friday, January 3, when a matatu traveling the Eldoret-Kitale route collided head-on with a lorry at the Chemoset area in Soy, along the Eldoret-Kitale Highway.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi confirmed the deaths of 10 people in the crash, with four others sustaining injuries.
Mwanthi said the matatu was reportedly speeding before veering off its lane and colliding with the lorry, causing fatal injuries to the matatu driver and eight passengers.
The injured were rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret, where one of the survivors died shortly after arrival.
The Great Rift Shuttle Sacco matatu involved in the Chemoset crash had just completed a drop-off in Soy before continuing on its route to Kitale.
It was returning to Nairobi when the collision occurred. Police are continuing their investigation into both accidents, with a focus on the causes and contributing factors.
