President William Ruto and Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni made a momentous visit to Siaya on Thursday, where they were warmly welcomed by Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for the Piny Luo Cultural Festival.
The occasion marked a significant cultural milestone for the Luo community, bringing together political leaders and members of the Luo diaspora to celebrate their rich heritage.
Museveni’s arrival in Kenya was facilitated by Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi, who welcomed him at the Busia border before he traveled to Siaya for the festivities.
The event was held at the iconic Got Ramogi, a site of deep cultural significance for the Luo people, believed to be the historical settlement of the community.
In a heartfelt message shared on X, Raila Odinga expressed his appreciation for the presidents’ presence, stating,
“The Piny Luo Cultural Festival is today honoured to host H.E President William Ruto and H.E President Yoweri Museveni at Got Ramogi.
We thank them for creating time to celebrate our culture.”
A key highlight of the festival was the installation of both Ruto and Museveni as Luo elders, a deeply symbolic gesture led by Ker Odungi Randa, the spiritual leader of the Luo community.
The ceremony signified the respect and acknowledgment of the two leaders by the Luo people, reinforcing the cultural bond between the Luo community and their political leadership.
The festival, which has been organized under the theme “Luo Unity in Diversity and in Diaspora,” aims to foster a sense of unity and pride among the Luo people across Kenya and the globe.
The event seeks to highlight the community’s traditions, values, and shared history, emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural identity in the modern world.
Attended by thousands of locals and visitors, the festival is set to conclude on Thursday, January 2, 2025, leaving behind lasting memories of cultural exchange and unity.
As the event draws to a close, it has already been hailed as a major step toward celebrating and strengthening the bonds within the Luo community, both in Kenya and in the diaspora.
