President William Ruto appointed Josephat Abaga Fan Sagero to the Nairobi Rivers Commission, following the decision of former nominated senator Milicent Omanga to decline the position of a member.
This appointment was officially announced in a special gazette notice issued on October 28.
“The appointment of Omanga Millicent is revoked pursuant to section 51 of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act,” the notice said.
Omanga on Saturday turned down an appointment to serve as a member of the Nairobi Rivers Commission.
She attributed her decision to personal reasons but did not provide further details.
“I’m deeply honored and grateful to H.E @WilliamsRuto for the trust you’ve shown in appointing me to serve on the Nairobi Rivers Commission.”
“It’s truly a privilege to be considered for such a vital role in improving our beloved Nairobi’s environment and public health. After careful consideration, I must respectfully decline the appointment due to personal reasons. I remain committed to supporting efforts aimed at restoring Nairobi’s rivers & stand ready to contribute in any capacity that aligns with my current commitments,” she said.
Ruto appointed former Starehe Member of Parliament Margret Wanjiru as the chairperson of the Nairobi Rivers Commission.
As a result of these changes, Ruto dismissed Pamela Olet, who had been serving as the chairperson of the commission.
The Nairobi Rivers Commission was established by President Ruto in February 2023, with a mandate to review past reports on the rehabilitation of the Nairobi River and to integrate those findings into new initiatives.
The commission is tasked with coordinating the efforts of various stakeholders involved in the restoration, protection, and rehabilitation of the riverine basin.
It will also oversee compliance with environmental laws and regulations in collaboration with relevant state departments, agencies, and ministries.
This initiative aims to restore the former splendor of the Kenyan capital, which the President noted has suffered significant environmental degradation over the years, resulting in the loss of its historical identity as the “City in the Sun.”
The current commission, under Pamela’s leadership, also includes Mumo Musuva from Nairobi County and Grace Senewa from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
