Tragedy as woman dies after falling into gold-crushing machine in Migori


A 60-year-old woman died on Friday afternoon after she reportedly slipped into a gold-crushing machine while working at a mining site in Masara village, Suna West Sub-county in Migori County.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 3pm at a gold crushing site.

The deceased was identified as Monica Atieno Otieno. She is said to have been working at her son’s gold crushing machine when the tragic accident happened.

Police said she accidentally slipped into the grinding gears of the machine, sustaining severe head injuries.

The woman was rushed to Ombo Mission Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police officers visited and documented the scene as investigations into the incident commenced.

The body was preserved at the hospital mortuary awaiting an autopsy.

Elsewhere, a 28-year-old electrician died on Friday morning in a suspected electrocution incident at a construction site in the Chai Road area within Starehe Sub-county, Nairobi.

According to the police, the incident occurred at around 10:50am at the Emaar Apartments construction site. 

The deceased was identified as Erick Ogara. He was working at the site as an electrician alongside a colleague when the incident happened.

Police said the deceased was welding when he suddenly collapsed while still holding the welding machine and died on the spot.

Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers came and processed the scene. Afterwards, the body was moved to the Nairobi Funeral Home awaiting postmortem examination.

Police have also launched investigations into the electrocution incident.
