Two men have been arrested in Garissa County after Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers allegedly caught them with 58 kilogrammes of wildlife carcasses in Ijara Sub-County.
The suspects were arrested on Saturday, September 5, 2026, following an intelligence report from members of the public.
KWS officers from Ijara mounted an ambush in the Wachakone area after receiving information about a group of suspected poachers operating in the area.
The officers intercepted the suspects and recovered two 50-kilogramme nylon sacks containing various wildlife carcasses.
According to the police, the recovered carcasses included 15 dik-diks, two gerenuks, one porcupine and three bustard birds.
Two slasher-like weapons that had allegedly been modified into pangas were also recovered from the suspects.
The suspects and the recovered exhibits were escorted to Masalani Police Station, where they were booked pending further legal action.
The arrest comes amid continued efforts by wildlife authorities to combat poaching and illegal trade in wildlife in northern Kenya.
The two suspects were expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, September 7, 2026, where they are likely to face charges related to illegal possession and killing of wildlife.
Police and KWS officers are continuing with investigations to establish whether the suspects were part of a wider poaching network operating in the area.
