Veteran KBC journalist and State House MC Sammy Lui passes away


Renowned Kenyan journalist and former State House Master of Ceremonies (MC) Sammy Lui Wangondu has passed away, Nairobi News can authoritatively report.

The legendary broadcaster, who served at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) for many years, died on the morning of Thursday, October 23, 2025, according to family sources.

Although his name may not be familiar to younger generations, particularly Gen Z, Lui was a household name in Kenya’s broadcasting scene during the formative years of national radio and television.

Beyond his work on air, he captivated audiences with his commanding voice and eloquence while serving as the official State House MC during national events.

His death was confirmed by his son, Chris Wangondu, who said that the veteran journalist passed away peacefully at his home in Subukia, Nakuru County, where he had been residing after retiring from active media work.

Family sources told members of the press that Lui had moved to the countryside following his long career in broadcasting and public service.

Lui will be fondly remembered for his rich baritone voice, impeccable mastery of the English language, and his ability to deliver national messages with grace and authority.

He was among the pioneering anchors at the Kenya Television Network (KTN), where he played a key role in shaping Kenya’s media landscape during its early years.

In addition to his work in the newsroom, Lui also served as the Director of Presidential Events under the late President Daniel arap Moi.

In that capacity, he presided over numerous state functions, national holidays, and military parades, earning admiration and respect across the political divide.

His contribution to Kenya’s broadcasting and public communication history remains indelible.
