Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has spoken out after his convoy was attacked in Limuru, Kiambu County.
In a statement on Thursday, November 26, Gachagua described the incident as a deeply troubling and shameful event, with clear complicity from certain state actors.
He particularly highlighted the trauma faced by a family at a funeral, who, while mourning the loss of a loved one, were forced to flee for safety as armed gangsters attacked the gathering.
“Today, I was at the funeral of a young man named Erastus Nduati in Limuru.
While we were preparing to lay him to rest, goons attacked us and other mourners, including children,” Gachagua said.
“We especially remember the family who had a loved one in a casket, who had to run to safety despite their profound grief.”
The former Deputy President recounted how armed gangs launched random attacks on mourners, using stones, machetes, iron bars, and sticks.
He specifically mentioned a group that followed him as he tried to reach his car, where they proceeded to assault the vehicle with stones and iron bars.
“We literally drove out of the venue under a hail of rocks!” Gachagua added.
He also pointed out that earlier in the week, the government had withdrawn the last remaining aspects of his security detail following his impeachment.
Gachagua stated that while he had not contested this decision, it was clear that no Kenyan should face such a situation.
“We did not raise an issue with this decision by the government, although the expectation was that any Kenyan could face such a challenge,” he remarked.
Despite the attack, Gachagua vowed not to be intimidated or deterred from supporting Kenyans in their time of need.
“We just expect that such a terrible moment of shame will not be repeated,” he added.
Allies of Gachagua have since revealed that the attack disrupted the funeral service.
Videos and photos shared online showed several individuals who had accompanied Gachagua to the event suffering injuries, with some seen bleeding after the melee.
A cameraman’s equipment was also damaged when he was forced to stop filming.
Additionally, vehicles, including a Land Cruiser used by Gachagua, were reported to have been damaged.
Kiambu Senator and former ally of Gachagua, Karungo wa Thang’wa, suggested the attack was an assassination attempt on the former Deputy President.
“It was an assassination attempt. But the People’s Deputy President is safe.
Thank you, Limuru, for ensuring our safety. We will not be intimidated or silenced now we know!” he stated.
