A 48-year-old man died after falling from a tree while cutting timber in Kisumu West Sub-County, Kisumu County.
The deceased, identified as Steven Ogai, a resident of Tambua Location in Vihiga County, was part of a four-man team hired to fell a tree and process it into timber on Saturday afternoon.
According to police, the incident occurred at about 2pm when Ogai climbed the tree to tie it before it was cut down. He reportedly slipped and fell to the ground.
The landowner rushed to the scene and found Ogai lying motionless with severe head injuries.
Police officers from Dago Police Station and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kisumu West visited the scene and confirmed that the man had died. They found the body with visible injuries to the forehead.
The scene was processed and photographed before the body was moved to St. Monica Hospital Mortuary in Kisumu, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police have launched investigations into the fatal workplace accident.
Meanwhile, police in Rongo, Migori County, have launched investigations into the suspected murder of a 35-year-old man whose body was found in a pool of blood near his home.
The deceased, identified as David Odiwor Mwai, was discovered on Saturday evening in Ojala area, about 500 metres from his homestead.
According to police, officers from Kamagambo Police Station responded to a report of a body lying on a vacant piece of land and found Mwai lying on his back in a pool of blood.
A preliminary examination revealed that he had sustained deep stab wounds to the lip and genital area and was bleeding from the mouth.
Investigators said Mwai, who earned a living as a casual labourer in Rongo town, was last seen alive on Friday at about 9pm while having supper at his mother’s house.
His mother told police that he left shortly afterwards and did not return home.
His body was discovered at about 5.20 p.m. on Saturday by his cousin who was on his way to fetch water from River Orando, about 60 metres from where the body was lying.
Police processed the scene but did not recover the weapon believed to have been used in the attack.
The body was moved to Rosewood Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination as detectives pursue those behind the killing.
Investigations are ongoing to establish the motive for the murder and identify the perpetrators.
