13-Foot Python seized in failed smuggling attempt at Namanga border

The National Police Service (NPS) has intercepted a live python in a bizarre wildlife trafficking attempt at the Namanga Border Post along the Kenya–Tanzania border.

The incident occurred during a routine inspection of a passenger bus travelling from Dar es Salaam to Nairobi, when officers flagged a suspicious package in the luggage compartment.

According to police, the box had been labelled as carrying “spare parts,” but upon inspection, officers discovered a live 13-foot python concealed inside.

“The package raised suspicion during routine screening, prompting officers to open it, where they found a live python,” authorities said.

The bus crew is currently being held for questioning as investigations into the attempted smuggling continue.

Police have since intensified inspections at the border point, warning against wildlife trafficking and other illegal cross-border activities.

“We remain vigilant to ensure compliance with wildlife protection laws and will take firm action against any attempts to smuggle protected species,” officials added.
