Government issues heavy rainfall warning ahead of Idd-ul-Fitr celebrations


As Kenyans prepare to mark Eid al-Fitr, the Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rainfall expected across many parts of the country from Friday through to next Tuesday.

According to the department, the rains are likely to intensify between Friday and Monday before gradually easing on Tuesday, although showers will persist in several regions including the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and the central highlands, including Nairobi.

“This period of heavy rain comes at a time when many families will be travelling and gathering to celebrate. We urge all Kenyans to exercise extra caution, particularly in areas prone to flooding,” the advisory stated.

Residents have been urged to avoid driving or walking through flowing water, remain alert for flash floods, and steer clear of sheltering under trees or near metal structures during storms.

Authorities also warned of increased risks in landslide-prone areas such as the Aberdare Range and the slopes of Mount Kenya.

Counties expected to experience heavy rainfall include Turkana County, Samburu County, Migori County, Nyamira County, Bungoma County, Busia County, Kakamega County, Vihiga County, West Pokot County, Baringo County, Elgeyo Marakwet County, Trans Nzoia County, Nandi County, Uasin Gishu County, Nakuru County, Siaya County, Kisumu County, Homa Bay County, Kisii County, Kericho County and Bomet County, among others.

Additional counties likely to be affected include Kiambu County, Embu County, Murang’a County, Kirinyaga County, Nyandarua County, Nyeri County, Laikipia County, Tharaka Nithi County, Meru County, Narok County, Kajiado County, Makueni County, Machakos County, Taita Taveta County, Kitui County, Kwale County, Mombasa County, Kilifi County and Garissa County. Parts of Marsabit County, Isiolo County, Wajir County, Mandera County and Tana River County are also expected to receive significant rainfall.

The warning comes amid a devastating flood situation that has already claimed 73 lives, with seven people still missing. Authorities say 68,975 people from 13,795 households have been displaced, while an additional 66,568 people from 13,313 households have been affected.

“The impact has been widespread, with families losing loved ones, homes and property, while critical infrastructure such as schools, markets, roads, water and electricity systems has been destroyed,” the statement noted.

In response, multi-agency teams including the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), National Police Service (NPS), Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS), National Government Administration Officers, county governments, engineers, Kenya Red Cross Society and Kenya Power have been deployed to support rescue operations and restore essential services.

“As a country, this moment calls for heightened vigilance, compassion and collective responsibility. Even as we celebrate Idd-ul-Fitr, let us look out for one another and follow safety guidance issued by authorities,” the statement added.

Authorities have urged Kenyans to prioritize safety during the festive period, emphasizing that protecting lives must remain the top priority.
