TikTok is one of the most popular social media platforms today, allowing users to share videos and connect with friends and followers. However, there are times when you may want to use the app without others knowing you are online. Whether you’re browsing content, editing drafts, or just taking a break from conversations, TikTok offers privacy settings that help you appear offline. Here’s how you can manage your presence on the app and maintain your privacy. Here is how to appear offline on TikTok.
Activity Status on TikTok
TikTok introduced the “Activity Status” feature to show when users are active on the app. When this setting is enabled, your followers or friends who follow you back can see a green dot next to your profile photo indicating that you’re online. They can also see the last time you were active. If you’d rather not let others know when you’re using the app, you can disable this feature.

To appear offline, go to your TikTok profile and tap the three-line menu at the top right corner. From there, select “Settings and Privacy,” then go to “Privacy.” Under the privacy menu, you’ll find the “Activity Status” option. When you toggle this off, your online status and last seen activity will no longer be visible to others. It’s worth noting that once you turn off your activity status, you won’t be able to see others’ status either.
Disabling Direct Messages to Avoid Notifications
Another way to maintain a low profile is by adjusting your direct message settings. If you’re receiving messages or don’t want to be contacted, you can limit who can message you. In the “Privacy” section of your settings, tap on “Direct messages” and choose whether you want to receive messages from everyone, friends, or no one at all. Choosing “No one” means you won’t appear available for chat, giving the impression that you’re offline.
Controlling Who Can See Your Posts
While appearing offline mostly relates to online status, some users may also want to limit visibility on new content. If you’re uploading videos but don’t want people to think you’re active, you can post privately. When uploading, tap on “Who can view this video” and select “Only me.” This allows you to stay active creatively without showing it to your followers in real-time.
Turning Off Read Receipts
In addition to activity status, TikTok allows users to manage read receipts in the inbox. If this feature is turned off, people you message will not see if you’ve read their messages. This is another way to avoid appearing active when you’re using the app quietly. You can manage this in the “Privacy” section under “Direct messages,” where you’ll find the “Read status” option.
