KRA To Set Up Mobile Tax Clinics Nationwide To Help Kenyans File Returns

Kenyans facing difficulties filing their tax returns can now breathe easier following the Kenya Revenue Authority’s (KRA) announcement of plans to establish mobile tax clinics across the country.

Speaking during a sensitisation forum in Uasin Gishu County on Saturday, May 24, KRA officials revealed that the mobile clinics will be deployed in major towns and will offer free assistance to taxpayers until the end of June.

The initiative aims to make it easier and cost-free for Kenyans to file their annual income tax returns.

“We have availed various places where you can file your returns and get support.

You can visit any of our tax service offices across the country. We also have our service desks in the Huduma centres,” a KRA official said.

“We have this month and next month to have the mobile clinics in various towns, so you could take advantage of all this set-up and be able to get support to file your returns.”

The clinics come alongside the expansion of additional tax service desks in populous regions, ensuring wider accessibility to tax filing support.

Huduma Centres remain available as well, offering another convenient option for taxpayers.

During the public engagement in Eldoret, KRA officials disclosed that only 2.4 million Kenyans out of the 8.5 million eligible taxpayers approximately 30% have filed their returns so far.

KRA reiterated that every Kenyan with a Personal Identification Number (PIN) is required to file an income tax return annually, even if they did not earn income during the fiscal year.

Taxpayers with no taxable income or whose businesses were inactive are expected to submit nil returns.

To further facilitate timely filing, KRA extended working hours across its Huduma and tax service centres starting May 20.

Most centres now operate from 7 am to 7 pm on weekdays and from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturdays, with Sundays off. On the final day of filing, June 30, offices will remain open for an extended 17-hour shift from 7 am until midnight.

Kenyans are encouraged to use the Authority’s online platform, the iTax portal (iTax.kra.go.ke), to file their returns conveniently from any location.

Taxpayers who fail to file their returns by the June 30 deadline face a penalty of sh 2,000.

The mobile clinics and extended working hours reflect KRA’s commitment to improving taxpayer services and ensuring compliance ahead of the filing deadline.
