How to Search on TikTok While on FaceTime (FT)

TikTok and FaceTime are two of the most used apps on mobile phones today, especially among users who enjoy multitasking. Whether you’re chatting with a friend or showing each other funny clips, you might find yourself wanting to search for something on TikTok while you’re still on a FaceTime call. The good news is that it’s possible to do both at the same time with the help of certain iPhone and Android features. This guide explains how to search on TikTok while still staying connected on FaceTime.

Using Picture-in-Picture (PiP) on iPhone

Apple introduced Picture-in-Picture mode for iPhones with iOS 14, which allows users to minimize a FaceTime call into a small floating window while they use other apps. If you’re on a FaceTime video call and want to search something on TikTok, you simply swipe up from the bottom of your screen or press the home button (depending on your iPhone model) while the FaceTime call is active. The FaceTime window will shrink and move to the corner of your screen.

Once the FaceTime call is in Picture-in-Picture mode, you can open the TikTok app. From there, use the search bar at the top of the screen to search for videos, hashtags, or creators just like you would normally. You’ll be able to scroll through TikTok while still seeing and hearing the person on the other end of your FaceTime call.

Keeping the FaceTime Call Active

It’s important to make sure the FaceTime window remains visible. If you accidentally close it, tap the floating FaceTime screen to expand it again or return to the FaceTime app through your app switcher. While in PiP mode, you can drag the floating window to any corner of your screen to keep it out of the way while browsing TikTok.

Note that although you can see your friend and continue talking, the other person won’t see what you’re doing on your screen unless you’re screen sharing. Your TikTok search activity remains private unless you choose to share it.

Using Split-Screen or Multi-Window on Android

If you’re using an Android phone that supports split-screen or multi-window mode, you can also search on TikTok while staying on a video call. Start your FaceTime equivalent video call using a compatible app such as Google Meet or WhatsApp. Then, enable split-screen mode through your phone’s multitasking settings. Open TikTok in the second window and start searching while keeping your call active in the other half of the screen.

While FaceTime is not officially available on Android, Android users can still join FaceTime calls through shared links from iPhone users. In such cases, the browser version of FaceTime can stay open while the TikTok app runs on the other side of a split-screen setup.

Although searching TikTok while on a FaceTime call is possible, it may slightly affect your call quality or video resolution depending on your phone’s performance and internet speed. Also, always be respectful during calls—if your attention is divided, let the other person know you’re browsing TikTok so they’re not confused or offended.
