TikTok, one of the most popular social media platforms today, allows users to connect with friends through their contact lists. While syncing your contacts can help you find and follow people you know, you might later want to remove or disconnect those contacts for privacy or personal reasons. Whether you’re cleaning up your follower list, adjusting privacy settings, or simply want to stop seeing suggestions based on your phonebook, this article will walk you through how to remove contacts from TikTok.
Why You Might Want to Remove Contacts from TikTok
There are several reasons why you may want to remove synced contacts from TikTok:
- To maintain your privacy and limit who can find you.
- To stop TikTok from suggesting people you know in real life.
- To clear out outdated or unwanted connections.
- To stop TikTok from accessing your phone contacts.
Whatever the reason, TikTok makes it relatively simple to manage and remove contact access.
Step 1: Unlink Your Contacts on TikTok
If you’ve previously allowed TikTok to access your contacts, you can stop this syncing at any time.
To unlink contacts:
- Open the TikTok app.
- Tap the Profile icon in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap the three lines (menu) in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings and Privacy.
- Scroll down and tap Privacy.
- Choose Sync contacts and Facebook friends.
- Toggle off Sync contacts.
This stops TikTok from continually syncing new contacts from your phone.
Step 2: Remove Already-Synced Contacts
Simply turning off the sync will not delete the contacts that TikTok has already imported. To remove those:
- After turning off contact sync (as above), stay on the same Sync contacts page.
- Tap Remove previously synced contacts.
- Confirm when prompted.
TikTok will then delete all contacts that were previously uploaded from your device. This action cannot be undone, but it can help clear your “Suggested accounts” and stop others from finding you using your phone number.
Step 3: Adjust Who Can Find You on TikTok
To fully protect your privacy, you may also want to adjust your discoverability settings:
- Go to Settings and Privacy.
- Tap Privacy.
- Scroll to Discoverability.
- Toggle off Let others find me using my phone number.
This ensures that even if someone has your contact information, they won’t automatically find your TikTok profile.
Step 4: Revoke TikTok’s Access to Contacts from Phone Settings (Optional)
To make sure TikTok cannot access your contacts at all, you can revoke access directly from your phone settings.
On iPhone (iOS):
- Open Settings.
- Scroll down and tap TikTok.
- Turn off the switch next to Contacts.
On Android:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps or Applications.
- Find and select TikTok.
- Tap Permissions.
- Turn off Contacts access.
Step 5: Clear Suggested Contacts (Optional)
If TikTok continues to show people you don’t want to see, consider clearing your TikTok app cache or logging out and back in after removing synced contacts. This can help refresh your suggestions.
