Three Arrested With Elephant Tusks In Kerugoya, Kirinyaga County

Three suspects have been arrested in Kerugoya Township, Kirinyaga County, after being found in possession of elephant tusks, in what authorities are calling a significant breakthrough in the fight against wildlife trafficking.

According to a statement by the National Police Service (NPS), the arrests were made on Sunday during a joint intelligence-led operation carried out in collaboration with officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

The suspects were intercepted while attempting to sell the tusks, which are believed to have been obtained through illegal poaching activities.

The recovered tusks have since been secured as exhibits as investigations continue to determine the full scope of the suspects’ involvement in the illegal wildlife trade.

“Wildlife crimes are serious offences that not only endanger the survival of protected species like elephants but also undermine Kenya’s long-standing efforts in wildlife conservation,” the NPS said in the statement.

“We wish to remind the public that any individual found to be involved in the illegal trade, possession, or trafficking of wildlife products will face the full force of the law.”

The suspects are currently in custody and are expected to be arraigned in court to face charges related to the possession of wildlife trophies, contrary to the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, 2013.

Kenya has strict laws in place to combat wildlife crime, with those convicted of possessing or dealing in ivory facing hefty fines and lengthy prison terms.

The country has earned global recognition for its conservation efforts and has taken a firm stance against poaching and the illegal ivory trade.

Authorities continue to urge the public to report any suspicious activity related to wildlife crimes, reaffirming their commitment to preserving Kenya’s biodiversity for future generations.
