KPA releases artistic images of upcoming Likoni ferry terminal and Kenyans are not impressed

For the longest time now, residents of Mombasa and it’s surrounding counties have been up in arms with the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and the Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) for doing so little in easing congestion at the Likoni crossing channel.

While some called out the aforementioned entities for not replacing their old ferries, many complained about the infrastructure around the Likoni terminal, terming them as some of the major causes of congestions.

Kenya Ports Authority and Kenya Ferry Services went back to the drawing board and came back with a solution; to expand the Likoni ferry terminal and possible give it an impressive facelift.

Well, it seems the companies have started working on the same and could not help but share with the public about what is in the pipeline.

Kenya Ports Authority on Sunday, September 21, 2025, posted several artistic images of how the new Likoni Ferry terminal will look like upon completion.

Through the photos and a subsequent statement issued by KPA, it is clear the new upcoming ferry terminal will come with a modern waiting lounge and parking.

“You asked for the artistic impressions of the ferry terminal designs.

A first look reveals — a blending of modern function with timeless coastal heritage.

The arches and geometric motifs borrow from Swahili-Islamic architecture, a style rooted in East Africa’s shorelines.

A space built for community, culture, and safe crossings.

Your ferry experience will never be the same again,” KFS captioned the lovely images.

The new ferry terminal which will be constructed on both sides (Mainland and South Coast) will feature a blend of modern and Swahili cultural designs, giving it that sweet Coastal vibe.

According to KPA, the new terminal will give ferry commuters a new experience and also ease the perennial congestions experienced at the crossing channel for decades now.

Well, KPA shared the new artistic images of the upcoming ferry terminal hoping to impress Kenyans but the opposite is true.

Some Kenyans congratulated KPA and KFS for the thoughtful upgrade but quite a multitude had a couple of negative things to say about the same.

Some claimed the design did not necessarily have to borrow from the Swahili culture as Mombasa is currently a cosmopolitan city.

Others went on to urgent the entities to focus more on acquiring new ferries as some of the ones operating currently are old and a safety hazard to commuters.

For pessimists, nothing the institutions can do that could change the situation at the busy crossing.

Anti-government critics raised alarm and claimed that the facelift could be one of the many ways some of Kenya Kwanza’s government officials want to siphon taxpayers’ money.
