American murder suspect arrested in Nairobi and extradited to the U.S. after 15 years on the run

An American fugitive has been arrested in Nairobi and extradited to the United States, 15 years after allegedly committing a brutal murder in Miami, Florida.

The suspect, now 34, is accused of fatally shooting Herbert Caniza during a botched robbery on September 7, 2010, when he was just 19 years old.

According to police reports, the suspect went to the victim’s home and shot him in the chest as soon as he opened the door.

Investigators say the motive was to steal drugs and money, a plan allegedly confirmed by the suspect’s former roommate.

A key piece of evidence recovered at the crime scene was a modified “Warner Brothers” t-shirt, used as a makeshift mask, which did not belong to the victim.

The roommate told authorities he had been present when the shirt was purchased.

Another associate told investigators the suspect had been behaving in a “paranoid, anxious, and erratic” manner on the day of the murder behavior that raised red flags.

However, the case took a decisive turn after the suspect’s mother revealed that her son had contacted her days after the killing, claiming he was in danger and needed to flee.

She later admitted to helping him leave the country by arranging travel to Brazil, where he stayed with relatives.

While the timeline of his arrival in Kenya remains unclear, the Miami Police Department, working with U.S. federal agencies, eventually traced the suspect to Nairobi.

He was arrested and extradited to Miami, where he was arraigned in court last week. Bond was denied.

The suspect has been charged with second-degree murder and is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

This is the second high-profile extradition of an American fugitive from Nairobi in recent months.

In July, a 20-year-old man from Washington State was apprehended in Nairobi in connection with the January 2024 murder of Mingyuan Huang during an attempted robbery in Tukwila.
