Mount Kenya University (MKU) has awarded a full scholarship to Kenyan environmentalist Truphena Muthoni in recognition of her outstanding contribution to environmental conservation and climate advocacy.
Muthoni recently made global headlines after breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous tree hug, an achievement aimed at raising awareness about environmental protection and mental wellness.
The scholarship was presented by Prof. Peter Wanderi, Principal for Corporate Services, on behalf of MKU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi.
Offered through the MKU Foundation, the scholarship will fully support Muthoni’s studies at the university beginning in January 2026.

MKU said the award reflects the institution’s commitment to nurturing change-makers who use innovation and advocacy to address pressing global challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, and mental health.
University officials noted that Muthoni’s record-breaking initiative went beyond a symbolic act, sparking public conversations on the importance of protecting trees, restoring ecosystems, and promoting emotional well-being through a connection with nature.
Speaking during the presentation, Prof. Wanderi praised Muthoni’s dedication and resilience, describing her as an inspiration to young people across the country.
He said MKU is proud to support students whose work demonstrates leadership, social responsibility, and a commitment to sustainable development.
Muthoni’s Guinness World Record attempt drew widespread attention from environmental groups, youth organizations, and conservation advocates, many of whom hailed her action as a creative approach to climate activism.
Her campaign emphasized the role of trees in combating climate change, improving air quality, and supporting mental health, particularly among young people facing increasing social and environmental pressures.
In her response, Muthoni expressed gratitude to MKU for the scholarship, saying it would empower her to further her education while expanding her environmental initiatives.
She added that the recognition has strengthened her resolve to continue advocating for conservation, community engagement, and mental wellness across Kenya.
The scholarship underscores MKU’s broader mission of supporting education that drives positive social impact.
As Muthoni prepares to begin her studies in 2026, the university said it looks forward to partnering with her in advancing environmental awareness, research, and community-based conservation efforts.
Congratulations, Truphena Muthoni, on this remarkable achievement.
