Deputy President Kindiki Explains His Absence From Public Events

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has addressed growing speculation about a potential rift with President William Ruto, clarifying that his recent absence from several public and national events was simply due to a short holiday break.

Since the end of 2023 and the beginning of the New Year, Kindiki has notably been absent from high-profile gatherings, including President Ruto’s New Year’s Eve speech and dinner at Kisii State Lodge, the Piny Luo Cultural Festival in Siaya County, and meetings with foreign dignitaries such as Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Ghana’s President-elect John Dramani Mahama.

Additionally, he did not attend the burial of Mama Anne Nanyama, mother of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, which further fueled rumors of a possible rift between him and the president.

These absences led to speculation that Kindiki’s relationship with Ruto might be strained, reminiscent of earlier tensions that preceded the fallout between Ruto and his impeached deputy, Rigathi Gachagua.

However, Kindiki dismissed these rumors on Saturday, explaining that he had taken a break from his official duties for personal rest during the festive season.

“My holiday is almost over, and I intend to make the most of the remaining time,” Kindiki said while attending the wedding of Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano’s son in Tigoni, Kiambu County.

“It’s important not to get caught up in trivial matters.”

He further reassured the public of his unwavering support for President Ruto, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to take some time off.

“I’m grateful to the President for allowing me this short break. I’m feeling recharged and ready for the year ahead,” he added.

“This is the year for all of us to unite and help take Kenya to new heights.”
