The County Government of Eldoret has reaffirmed its commitment to sports development with the ongoing transformation of the historic Kipchoge Keino Stadium into a world-class multi-purpose facility.
The major facelift is part of the Government’s broader strategy to invest in sports and talent development as a catalyst for national pride and economic growth. The upgraded stadium is expected to serve as a key training and backup venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Construction works are progressing steadily, with road works underway, reinforced concrete beam installations on the southern stand ongoing, and structural formwork nearing completion. The western VIP pavilion is almost complete, pending canopy installation.
The project has so far engaged approximately 400 workers on site, highlighting its contribution to job creation and stimulation of local economic activity.
Upon completion, the stadium’s seating capacity will increase from 10,000 to 15,000. The upgrade will also introduce FIFA-standard infrastructure, including floodlights, modern media facilities, and international-specification changing rooms.
Named after legendary Kenyan athlete Kipchoge Keino, the stadium remains the only public facility in the North Rift region equipped with a synthetic track, making it a primary training ground for elite distance runners.
As one of the few international-standard sports facilities outside Nairobi, the revamped stadium is expected to enhance sports tourism, boost the hospitality and transport sectors, and further cement Eldoret’s reputation as a global athletics hub.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is also supporting the project by embedding emergency preparedness frameworks and safe public event infrastructure standards to ensure the venue meets requirements for hosting major local and international competitions.
